Job Shadow
On September 14, 2016, I job shadowed police officer, Jesse Cavasos, from the Lindsay Police Department. I choose to job shadow a police officer because I am interested in law enforcement. We stayed here in town throughout the day from nine in the morning to one in the afternoon.
For the most part we drove around Lindsay and received calls from the police department. As we were driving around we noticed that the license plate on a red Honda wasn’t fully visible. The officer then pulled them over and after speaking to all of the passengers, one of them confessed about a warrant that they might have or haven’t already surve. After calling the department, he let the passenger know that it was already cleared. Minutes later we got a call asking us to go to an address to clarify if a sex offender really did live in the address that he had registered. After arriving, it was very clear that the house was lonely with nobody living there. We went to a second address and he wasn’t there either and now he has a warrant for his arrest. The last call that we received that day was a request for the officer Cavasos to translate for another cop. The case was stolen mail but the robber was caught and the mail was returned back to its owner.
After asking officer Cavasos a few questions and doing a ride along I learned that i want to be more than a police officer. He confessed that being a police officer wasn’t very rewarding because of the process of catching someone and making a report so that they could be free within hours or days. When i asked, ”What was the most rewarding part of his job?” he answered, “Seeing people that I’ve helped and them saying thank you or a wave.” I liked the idea of people being thankful for the hard work. I then asked, “ What inspired you to choose your career?” He answered, “Not doing the samething everyday, met new people and helping people.” I totally agreed with his answer because I want to do something new everyday. I learned that they do basic 6 month police academy. I also learned that some qualities that you must have are social skills, thick skin and to not take stuff personally. All qualities that I feel that I already have.
After the ride along and research on the career i came to the conclusion that i want to be more than a police officer. Being a police officer does sound exciting and all but not very rewarding. I am still interested in law enforcement but something like a correction officer or a highway patrol.
